Why do I get cracks between boards of my new hardwood floor? It is normal for the interior of the house to dry out during the heating season. When this happens the moisture level of the hardwood changes and becomes very dry therefor, the wood shrinks. It is considered normal shrinkage up to a width of a dime between boards. Most people worry about the wood staying this way especially the first year they have the wood. Once you go through one full year of season changes you will get to know your floor and see how the movement changes from season to season. After a year or two, you will not notice as much floor movement. The floor movement can be minimized by maintaining a consistent level of moisture inside your house with using a de-humidifier in the summer and humidifiers in the winter.
How do I keep my hardwood floor looking new? I'm concerned about my pets and the new carpets in my home. What should I know? My children occasionally spill drinks on our carpet. How should I clean up spills?
