Your carpet's longevity will depend on several factors. Before you buy carpet, consider the following questions:
Carpet is offered in a variety of styles: Velvet cut pile carpets offer the ultimate in elegance. Pile fibers blend together to give an ultra-smooth look. Footprints and vacuum marks show easily on velvets. Saxony cut pile carpets are very similar to velvets, but are not as formal. Saxonies are available in a wide range of subtly different looks, depending on the tufting used to create the carpet. Textured cut pile carpets have a more casual look. Yarn tips are crimped to create a two-tone nubby look. This finished look helps hide traffic marks and dirt.
Cut and loop carpets, generally known as "sculptured" carpets, combine pile styles to create a variety of patterns. Offered in single- and multi-toned colors, these carpets hide soil well. Berber carpets are created using a loop pile. Some carpet loops are level, creating an even look, while others are tufted at different levels to create a variety of patterns. Berbers are made in solid and flecked color schemes, and are excellent in areas where stains and heavy traffic is an issue. Frieze carpets are made from regular textured fiber and twisted until it actually bends in several different directions when the carpet is tufted. People often refer to this style of carpet as cut pile berber. Frieze carpets characteristically have darker colored flecks or a darker dyed fiber twisted into the yarn. Due to its high twist factor, these carpets are very durable.
